This boldly proportioned ripple-moulded frame follows a design popularised in Flanders in the mid-17th century but was likely made in Italy, where the influence of Northern European craftsmen working in Rome and Florence was widespread. Figures such as Giacomo Herman and Giovanni Falker (both German, active c.1688) and the Swiss carver Johann Sigrist (c.1675) helped shape a distinctive hybrid style.
